Edo no Toki pocket watch brings Edo period time back to life in the modern era
A pocket watch that seems to mark not time but the era.

A Japanese pocket watch that blends Edo period and modern time.

Edo no Toki Reiwa Edition Pocket Watch 10123 Silver

This Japanese pocket watch will spark conversations like never before: ``What time is it now?'' ``It's the hour of the Rabbit.''

This pocket watch is a modern version of a daimyo clock/Japanese clock that can simultaneously display the time from the Edo period (temporary time system), which is familiar to many as "What time is it now?", and the current time.

And then there's the "Edo no Toki" Japanese pocket watch, which will make you feel like you've traveled back in time to the Edo period. This is a product we highly recommend not only to pocket watch fans, but also to fans of period dramas.

Edo no Toki Reiwa Edition Pocket Watch 10123 Silver
A pocket watch that brings the time of the Edo period back to modern times.

Japan's unique "unscheduled time system"

In modern times, we live under a "fixed time system" where the length of a day is set at 24 hours, but before the Edo period, people lived by waking up with the sunrise and going to bed with the sunset, so they used a "variable time system" where the length of a day changed depending on the season.

Comes with handmade Edo braided silk cord (black) by artisans.

12 Zodiac Rings

Equipped with a standard 12-hour hand and a 24-hour hand that shows Edo time, this revolutionary watch allows you to know Edo time in the modern era by attaching a zodiac ring that shows Edo time for each month between the rotating bezel on the surface and the watch body.

The Edo Period's Varying Time System and the Use of the Silver Moon

●About the time system used in the Edo period

The time system used from the Edo period to the early Meiji period was called the "temporary time system" and was determined based on the movement of the sun . Based on dawn and dusk, a day was divided into two parts, daytime and nighttime, and each part was then divided into six parts, and a day was measured in 12 parts (named after the twelve zodiac signs). This is a time system unique to Japan that is unique anywhere in the world.

With this method, the length of one koku differs between day and night, and of course the times of dawn and dusk change daily, so the length and start time of each koku also changes depending on the season. At that time, a year was divided into 24 periods and the "koku" was changed.

This is a rather complicated and strange system of timekeeping, but when you consider that in an era when clocks were a luxury item only available to a select few feudal lords, and the movement of the sun was the only guide to time that everyone could share, and that it was an era without electricity, so people worked when it got light and rested when it got dark, it can be said to be a very rational and reasonable system of timekeeping.

In keeping with the times, this "unfixed time system" was changed to the current "fixed time system" in 1872, which measures a day as 24 equal hours.
