Radio-controlled clock Q&A - Frequently asked questions -

Q.What kind of radio waves are standard time signals?

A. Standard radio waves (Japan Standard Time) are long waves (standard radio waves) operated by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) as Japan Standard Time.

It is transmitted from two locations: the Fukushima station (frequency 40kHz) on Otakadoyayama in Fukushima Prefecture, and the Kyushu station (frequency 60kHz) on Haganeyama in Saga Prefecture.

Standard time signals are controlled by an ultra-high precision atomic clock with an error of approximately 1 second every 100,000 years, and contain calendar information in addition to the time.

Q. Can radio-controlled clocks receive signals anywhere in Japan?

A. The areas where standard time signals can be received vary depending on the conditions, but they are generally received within a range of about 1,000 km from the transmitter, so they can be said to cover the entire country of Japan.

However, even within the reception range, reception may not be possible due to factors such as the region, terrain, buildings, weather, time of day, and installation location.

When using the device, please place it near a window where it can receive radio waves as easily as possible, and avoid places where radio noise is generated.

[Major locations where reception is difficult]
・Underground areas of buildings and underground shopping malls ・Near high-voltage lines, TV towers, or overhead train wires ・Near home appliances or office equipment ・Near construction sites, airports, or heavy traffic areas ・Near metal shutters or blinds ・In the mornings and evenings, or when it is raining

Q. Can radio-controlled watches be used overseas?

A.Generally, radio-controlled watches receive Japan Standard Time and adjust their time accordingly, so even if you use it overseas, it may not receive Japan's standard radio waves and may not display the correct time for the local area.

When using the watch overseas, please disable the automatic radio wave reception function. In this case, the watch will function as a regular quartz (battery-powered) watch.

Q. Can radio-controlled clocks be used in apartments or offices?

A. In buildings made of reinforced concrete or steel frames, such as office buildings and apartment buildings, radio waves are prevented from penetrating, resulting in poor reception.

It is easier to receive radio waves near a window than in a recessed location in a building. Please check the reception conditions before use.

Wooden houses are thought to have little impact.
