About FORTIS

Fortis was founded in 1912. Its founder, Walter Vogt, had the ambition to produce the highest quality, most reliable Swiss-made watches in the world.

The name Fortis comes from the Latin for "strong" or "powerful," and even now, more than 100 years after the first wristwatch was released from the Grenchen headquarters, the spirit of Walter Vogt lives on in the company's products.

With the exception of precision checks and water resistance tests, all other work is done by hand by a watchmaker, as nothing beats the skill of an experienced watchmaker.

This way of thinking is rare these days, but being able to produce products based on our own rules and prioritizing quality is one of our strengths as an independent company that does not belong to any group.

In 1926, Fortis unveiled the world's first automatic wristwatch, developed in collaboration with John Harwood, at Baselworld, the world's largest watch fair. This surprised the world and increased Fortis' reputation and capabilities around the world.

1994. FORTIS chronograph watches are certified as the official watches of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia.

The crew of the EURO-MIR94 space mission, launched in October of that year, were equipped with FORTIS Cosmonaut Chronographs, which have since been adopted as the official equipment for astronauts departing from the Center.

Fortis is also the only watch brand officially recognized for the GTS (Global Transmission Service) space development program on the large-scale ISS (International Space Station), which began in 2001, and its watches continue to support the six-monthly missions.
